Barbara Adachi, Human Capital Executive & Corporate Board Director

Barbara Adachi is an accomplished board director and former senior executive with deep expertise in human capital strategy, employee benefits, insurance, and healthcare. She is recognized for advising organizations on complex transformation initiatives—particularly as they navigate workforce evolution, digital innovation, AI adoption, and the post-pandemic hybrid era. Her leadership focuses on aligning business strategy with talent, culture, and operational resilience across diversified industries, including financial services and insurance.

Prior to her retirement, Barbara was chief executive and National Managing Partner for Deloitte Consulting’s Human Capital Consulting Practice, a $1B business with over 3,000 practitioners in the U.S., Mexico, and India. In this role, she led operations, P&L, strategy, talent, and client engagement—driving 43% top-line and 41% bottom-line growth, including three strategic acquisitions. Throughout her career, she specialized in employee benefits and insurance consulting, serving as the Lead Partner for the University of California system and CalPERS, two of the nation’s largest employers. She has advised Fortune 500 companies, large health plans, and public institutions on market strategy, product design, and benefit delivery. Earlier in her career, Barbara held executive roles at Blue Cross of California (now Elevance) and served as an insurance broker and consultant at several national employee benefits and property-casualty insurance firms.

As a board director, Barbara brings a strong record of governance, business transformation, and human capital strategy in complex, regulated sectors. She currently serves on the boards of Old Republic International (NYSE: ORI), a Fortune 500 multi-line property and casualty insurance company, where she sits on the Audit and Governance & Nominating Committees, and VSP Vision, the nation’s largest managed vision care company, where she chairs the Compensation & Human Capital Committee. Her experience spans insurance, benefits administration, financial services, and workforce strategy, positioning her to contribute valuable insights on risk oversight, human capital, and enterprise growth across benefits, insurance, and managed care organizations.

Barbara is an NACD Directorship Certified director and holds the NACD CERT Certificate in Cybersecurity Oversight. Barbara was recognized as one 2025 Most Influential Women Corporate Directors by Women.Inc. She was named an NACD Directorship 100 Honoree and recognized by BoardProspects as one of 100 AAPI Board Members Making a Difference. Earlier honors include being named one of the “100 Most Influential Women in Business” by the San Francisco Business Times for 10 consecutive years (earning “Forever Influential” status), and receiving Consulting Magazine’s Women’s Leadership Award, the Asian Women in Business Leadership Award, and Profiles in Diversity’s “Women Worth Watching.”

A trailblazer throughout her career, Barbara was the first Asian and female partner to lead Deloitte’s national Human Capital Consulting business. She also served as National Managing Principal for Deloitte’s award-winning Women’s Initiative (WIN), leading the firm to achieve the milestone of 1,000 women partners, principals, and directors and earning Deloitte its second Catalyst Award.

Barbara earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California. Outside of board service, she enjoys international travel, fly fishing, and entertaining.
